This week's Friday pub is Sloan's. It started life as a coffee house in Morrisons Court, named after Glasgow Baillie John Morrison, back in 1797. The cobbled courtyard was the scene of cock-fighting, and twice a week, a stagecoach would leave the Court bound for Edinburgh.
The journey lasted five hours and, for a fare of 9s, each passenger was allowed to take one canvas travelling bag. David Sloan bought the venue, known as the Arcade Café at the turn of the 20th Century, and renamed it the Sloans Arcade Café.
He then transformed it into an opulent venue with a lounge bar, several dining rooms, a cocktail bar, an aquarium, and a Grand Ballroom - a stunning space featuring a magnificent vaulted ceiling, period marble fireplace and intricate stained-glass windows.
It features Baillie John Morrison's tenement, location of Catherine Cranston's first tea room from 1878. But if you look closely in the bottom right, you'll see Joseph Wright's Argyle St shop, bearing the name of his famous Drooko umbrellas, now Royal Drooko in acknowledgment of his famous clientele
That's it lying flat, btw. I believe it's located in the stairwell leading down to the low level platforms. So it's under the Hielenman's Umbrella 👌
