Our large sample allows us to look at these relatively rarely used platforms: Telegram, Signal, Parler, VK, Gettr. We find that MIMS are used more frequently than alternative social networks. There are somewhat distinct types of alternative platforms that differ in their affordances. 2/

We test whether users choose these platforms to protect their privacy from Big Tech or for political reasons (e.g. anti-establishment views). Right-wing ideology, especially, predicts use of these platforms. Yet, alternative platforms are used in addition to, not instead of established platforms /3
