"Game dev is one of those jobs you only do when you really want to. It's not going to make your parents proud, you're unlikely to get rich in an industry that lays off people for making superhits, and its a demanding & confrontative job. Why would you let a machine do the thing you're here to do?"
I spent the last few months talking to over 30 game developers about generative AI. It began as a sort of interview survey but became a pretty comprehensive collection of arguments against the technology altogether.

And many more. I'll share more insights from a lot of them soon.
With credits ranging from Dispatch and Marvel Rivals to Uncharted and Dragon Age, over 30 devs share their thoughts on gen AI
A lot of these interviews were conducted at random at GDC – literally walking up to any dev with a panel or booth. I was also able to include a lot of devs who I've spoken to several times before. I would love to hear your thoughts on gen AI, either in replies/shares or at the email in my bio.

My core questions were simple. How do you feel about generative AI in games and in game development? Do you want to use it? And how do you want to see gen AI treated in the games industry? The responses I got were overwhelmingly negative toward AI.
This is the first of several articles GamesRadar+ has planned on gen AI. I am sitting on 15,000 transcribed words and I want to share as many of them as possible. In the coming weeks, we'll have another large feature giving more space to indie dev voices, as well as individual deep dives with devs.
Thanks so much to all the devs who spoke to me, including: David Gaider @davidgaider.bsky.social | Rami Ismail @ramiismail.com | David Szymanski @duskdev.bsky.social | Dave Oshrey @dave.newblood.games | Nick Herman @nicholasherman.bsky.social | John Buckley @buckycm.bsky.social
