Forgive me, but I would suggest that Bloomberg's premise - if even the UK, "no democracy was immune to nationalism" - was in itself exceptionalist thinking.
Britiain has always been nationalistic, not exceptional. It just hid it better, with good marketing.

Brexit did more than pull Britain out of Europe. It showed that no democracy was immune to populist nationalism.
