My last playthrough actually was of the remaster. I like all the QOL stuff buuut I wish they went further like actually adding all the missing story stuff instead of leaving it on the untranslated and dead gacha game that came out at the same time.
I never really saw the game as purely pixel art even in the psx because of how painterly the background was so it didn't bother me but I see what you mean.
Square's just bad with preserving their data, could be worse tho like FFIX's background upscale. As far as upscales go I think this one's fine
