Watching the end of this Scotland game is reminding me of the story my (Scottish descended) grandfather told me about our ancestors. Apparently they were competing for some land in Scotland in the Olden Days. Rules were, row across this lake—whoever got their hand on the opposite shore first, won.
According to Wikipedia, it all started in the 80s because Scottish fans, who had previously had a reputation for hooliganism, wanted to change that reputation and also to distance themselves from English fans specifically. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tartan_...
