Scientists are making tremendous progress; it's mostly in areas that tend to require larger teams b/c a lot of the low-hanging fruit has been picked (as Dan notes). Also: student-led projects have become much more of a priority within the academy & places like Bell Labs don't exist any more. But:

It's so wild reading posts from colleagues in Europe where science continues to be funded and social science, in particular, continues to thrive and be celebrated. Meanwhile, here in America we're watching our research pipelines dry up & NIH & NSF are just... not issuing grants. What a weird time.

Grew up in a small suburb and a small town. Thought I would only thrive in a rural place b/c it’s what I knew. I was afraid of cities until I actually lived in one. Then after two years in Philadelphia I remember thinking one day “wow that’s weird, my depression and malaise have vanished.” 🤷‍♀️
