As another poster notes, retaining FX assets is also more balance sheet positive than using them to pay off low yielding domestic debt. That story extends broadly to Japanese corporates too. The demographic differential will also attenuate as the rest of the world ages.
Are any market participants avoiding the yen because of debt concerns? It seems like the issue is demographics and the accompanying low growth and low interest rates. On assets, surely it is known that sizeable foreign assets can be sold if needed. Why do they need to be sold now?
