Great thread on AI in Unis and how it combines with the funding issues we've seen in Higher Ed over the last 20/25 years. I agree basically 100% with what Dan says here, while adding on that those in leadership at Unis feel pushed to explore AI because of the slightest chance it might give an edge.

In this thread, Zach is getting at the fundamental tension of higher education: many (not all) students are coming to us for a credential. Our job is to get them to learn certain skills and ways of thinking before we give them that credential. This leads to an unfortunate tension.

Not sure if this is a hot take, but the apparently frequent cheating or borderline cheating with Ai in University seems to me less about Ai and more about how sick the system has gotten.
Compare for example to learning from a teacher to graft trees. In that case, cheating would be absurd. Why?
