Many people have a vested interest in pretending otherwise, but the US research university is globally dominant to an almost unbelievable degree. The typical state university is a football team stapled to a R&D lab with a budget bigger than the entire nation of Belgium.

Great thread on AI in Unis and how it combines with the funding issues we've seen in Higher Ed over the last 20/25 years. I agree basically 100% with what Dan says here, while adding on that those in leadership at Unis feel pushed to explore AI because of the slightest chance it might give an edge.
