In 20 years of university teaching I have had one Jordan Peterson fan announce that she would not read any “sociology” I assigned, on principle, and one self-described “conservative” ask me to reprimand a classmate for her choice of t-shirt.
That’s all the student-driven cocooning I’ve encountered

'An Invitation to Sociology' is a 30-minute film introducing Sociology. It uses the example of studying a police officer to explore a range of sociological theories and ideas. It is a summary of what I try to get across to my students during their first few weeks of study.

What “distressing” ideas? How are they “cocooned”? It’s amazing how much publicity one can get by reinforcing cliches that accord so little with the experiences of so many of us who actually teach college students.

Do more Public Sociology! We allow the grifters of the world to dominate on the issues Sociology is best placed to explain. Everyday people don't read academic journals or attend conferences. We are complicit in our own demise and in the exploitation of public issues. We speak too much to ourselves!
An interesting article, if a little fatalistic. Sociology is surrendering to philosophy because it refuses to engage outside of its own bubble. We only talk to each other, and only in ways that make it difficult for outsiders to engage with us. Considering our subject matter, it's quite ironic.
The only known recording of Erving Goffman. Lecture at PSA about fieldwork. Interesting, funny and lively reflections from a sociological legend! I couldn't contain my joy when I found the original recording. I hope it makes someone as happy as it did me! Enjoy!

Sociology needs to do more as a discipline to reach and make itself accessible to the public.
The platforms exist. They're horrible. But if we don't engage with and adapt to them, we don't engage the massive audiences they cater to.
Meet the public where they are!
