When you add in the fact that we are playing poorly defensively, have been a poor base running team for years, have no pitchers beyond Sanchez pitching well, and are run by the inept quartet of Topper, Dusty, Kevin Long, and Dombrowski, we are absolutely screwed. 100 losses this season is in play.
The Phillies WAR for the entire offense so far this year is -0.6.
It’s a hard stat to find data to compare to, but per ChatGPT, it’s historically bad and possibly unprecedented.
It means that if the Phils had started the Iron Pigs lineup for the whole season, they would be hitting better.
How bad are the Phillies? In addition to having the worst record and worst run differential in all of MLB, they rank at or near the bottom in AVG, OPS, ERA, WHIP, and WAR. Interestingly, they lead in least CS and least GIDP, which sounds good, but really means they get very few baserunners.
How do you explain the Phillies turnaround? Topper blew games all the time, so that’s part of it. Mattingly certainly deserves credit. The law of averages plays a part. Some are even giving Elmo credit. But I’m going to argue that the biggest factor is Stubbs being back. He’s the heart and soul.
