To be clear, it looks like the conference organizers called the cops. They may have been worried because Jay Bhattacharya, the pro-Trump NIH director, was scheduled to speak (and he did in fact cancel). Looks like a case of "obeying in advance" - people fearing the state's reaction.
Worth a read. Many have taken note of the growing solidarity in the science community in opposition to the OMB proposed rule. But this must be just the start.
