Trump said he would take over D.C. if Janeese Lewis George, a self-described democratic socialist, won the upcoming Democratic primary.
Lewis George, who is now poised to become D.C.'s next mayor, said Trump’s comment was an assault on Home Rule:
NEW: A federal judge allowed legal challenges to Trump's executive order targeting mail voting to proceed, ruling it would harm states' ability to carry out the midterms.
While Trump and GOP states requested that the suits be dismissed, the judge said the order was "ripe and fit" for legal review.
NEW: Trump's directive to build a national voter list is expected to be implemented by June 30 despite an active legal effort to block it.
Election officials will gain access to citizenship data before voters can verify possible errors, risking possible disenfranchisement before the midterms.

HAPPENING TODAY: The Supreme Court will consider hearing two cases, both involving a common-sense federal law that prevents voters from being kicked off the registration rolls shortly before an election.
Here’s what could happen if SCOTUS takes the cases:
NEW: The USPS is starting to create a new records system to track mail ballots, laying the groundwork to collect records related to mail-in and absentee ballots.
The revelation underscores the Trump administration is taking steps to build out his anti-mail voting order amid legal challenges.
⚠️ A conservative legal group is demanding access to Oklahoma’s voter registration list.
The group has launched similar efforts in other states, often casting voter roll access as a matter of transparency while pushing claims that can fuel mass removals.
Courts have delivered mixed results.
NEW: Federal judges appeared doubtful that Tennessee Republicans intentionally diluted minority voting power through their recent gerrymander, which eliminated the state's sole majority-Black district.
If upheld, Black voters in Memphis will lose representation in the midterms.

The judge said Trump's order is “both ripe and fit” for legal review because it will affect elections this November.
The lawsuit underscores how the administration’s nationwide push for state voter rolls is bolstering efforts in the same direction by outside right-wing groups eager to pare the rolls.
Kenyan McDuffie conceded in D.C.’s mayoral primary Thursday morning, all but ensuring that Janeese Lewis George, a self-described democratic socialist, will serve as the next leader of the nation’s capital.
