I remember loving THE LOST DAUGHTER but THE BRIDE! did not work for me on almost any level. Barely remember the last time it was this hard for me to finish a movie. I’ll give Maggie Gyllenhaal many more chances in the director’s seat but this was a near total miss for me. #TheBride

"While Backrooms occasionally trades the eerie intimacy of the original YouTube videos for a strain of lead-footed literalism... Parsons’ assured command of the film’s bone-chilling dread [and] thematic ambition more than justifies the leap from viral curiosity to prestige production." Full review:
Had to break out the Garage Du Cinema to show my daughter THE LAST JEDI for the first time. (Prolly only my third time seeing it?) This is a four quadrant studio blockbuster that simply speaks to me on a pretty profound level.
I just saw BACKROOMS knowing next to nothing about it. @juliansingleton.bsky.social seems to have grasped it a lot more than I did in his piece at @cinapse.bsky.social. It was a pretty unique and haunting experience for me even if some of the purpose and lore eluded me.
2nd viewing. Had to show my daughter. I hate it less now. Had years to let the disastrous return of the Emperor sink in. It remains cowardly & creatively bankrupt. But the characters/actors shine through almost in spite of the catastrophe of writing & decision making that is Palpatine boxd.it/eFsHCz
My kid graduated from elementary school today and I’m hella proud and more emotional about it than expected. We’ve been at that school since she was Pre-K, navigated COVID at that school… basically I’m a sap and I’m posting about it.
