On this day 25 years ago (1991): the UK's first red route came into force in Islington. They would soon become a common sight across London and other urban areas.
Screenshot of Southampton in the 1960s - and a different take on "give way to the right" signs! @showmeasign.online @sabre-roads.org.uk @roads.org.uk Some bus action as well - a Hants & Dorset Lodekka as well as a Corporation bus parked up on the left.

This week's #ThrowbackThursday takes us to London Road in Manchester, and the city's first bus lane. And is that a fire engine poking its nose out of the historic fire station? You can also feel the heat and smell the fumes in this nostalgic photo.

Why are transport enthusiasts marking the loss of the A6144(M), twenty years on? My latest post is a deep dive into the strange story of one of the UK's strangest roads. open.substack.com/pub/roadsorg...
On this day 15 years ago (2011): Cashel services opened. Ireland's first privately developed motorway service area began a new era where anybody could build a service station faster than the government.
On this day 30 years ago (1996): the Second Severn Crossing opened. It replaced the existing Severn Bridge (pictured), which was congested and in need of repairs.

Away from major roads there are some fascinating little things in the UK - one example is this. www.sabre-roads.org.uk/wiki/Kinloch...
DID YOU KNOW? The A740 is an example of a road number that has become defunct twice. Check out the SABRE Wiki for more road related facts, and if you have your own info to contribute... feel free to become involved! www.sabre-roads.org.uk/wiki/A740_(G... www.sabre-roads.org.uk/wiki/A740_(P...

The A6144(M) was an excellent idea - sure, it didn't fit what people expect a motorway to look like, but it was perfectly appropriate and legit. The former A6144(M) and the old A6144 through Sale now look identical on maps, which is a real disbenefit. www.sabre-roads.org.uk/wiki/A6144(M)
