Three observations, about Platner’s speech only:
1. He appeals to Mainers’ sense of place, a tactic Zohran Mamdani used to great effect in New York City last year.
2. He barely mentions party affiliation at all.
3. He attacks his opponent’s greatest strength, her inoffensiveness.
Anyone who has ever hiked in the Big Bend knows how absurd it is to extend that stupid wall through the park. The terrain is very difficult, the climate unforgiving most of the year. The whole area is remote. It’s easier to cross the US-Mexico border nearly anywhere else. From @texastribune.org

I’ve commented elsewhere about Platner’s Senate candidacy. This speech did what a candidate in his position needs to do this year, when voters are overwhelmed by national politics, discontented with political parties, and can choose an incumbent Senator who has been around forever.

I've spent months speaking to current & retired Black service members about being part of the military in this political moment. What I found were officers and soldiers despondent at the resurgence of racism, yet often insistent that they were fighting for what this country could be, not what it is.
They devoted their lives to serving the United States. Now the nation’s top military leader is sending the message that they’re not welcome.
We should be clear what today’s action represents. It is a declaration by every Republican in Congress that they are for the white & against the colored.
