How can radical histories be so completely misunderstood, generation after generation, even by - or especially by - those in positions of power?

I have one which is only moderately embarrassing, about attending a talk by William Fishman - legendary historian/ chronicler of the East End Jewish and anarchist life in the 19th century (my own area), c.2003. I gushed quite a lot during the Q&A and desperately tried to get some anecdotes about 1/2
