"The mere existence of trillionaires is a major political and economic problem, probably the defining issue of our time," writes @gabrielzucman.bsky.social. "When the power of wealth is wielded by sociopaths, the consequences are a matter of life and death."
Both the government and the Court of Appeal now treat protesters as terrorists and terrorists as protesters. It's hard to accept that a "Labour" government is imposing rightwing authoritarianism on the UK, but please read this column to see what's happening.+🧵 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
The right is obsessed with ‘two-tier policing’. This is indeed a two-tier government – but the real victims are progressives, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

There is a fundamental tension between extreme wealth and the very possibility of democracy. That’s because extreme wealth is always an extreme power

I find it extraordinary and truly infuriating that the judges could say this. How can radical histories be so completely misunderstood, generation after generation, even by - or especially by - those in positions of power?
"...we should stop moralising persistence. Survival in academia’s funnel is shaped by privilege, wealth, health, caregiving responsibilities and timing. It is not a clean proxy for superiority. It is often a proxy for who has enough support, security and luck to remain in the funnel" This
And my perennial favourites: an epistolary encounter with Sheila Rowbotham, who wrote me a really nice letter about anarchist figures we both studied.

Ooh anyone up for sharing their encounters, however grand or anticlimactic, with historians/ academics they admire? Maybe I'll share mine too...
I have one which is only moderately embarrassing, about attending a talk by William Fishman - legendary historian/ chronicler of the East End Jewish and anarchist life in the 19th century (my own area), c.2003. I gushed quite a lot during the Q&A and desperately tried to get some anecdotes about 1/2

famous figures and their interactions (for I study activist networks). Let's just say he was neither interested nor particularly forthcoming.

Court of Appeal judges here demonstrate complete ignorance of the reality of the suffrage movement. Far from operating transparently the militant suffragettes covertly ran destructive arson and bombing campaigns that harmed both property and people. Learn some history before quoting it fgs.

Unlike other high-profile professions, academia treats rejection as personal judgement, can it create ways of talking about rejection that are more realistic?
