THE DEATH OF ROBIN HOOD is full of atmosphere and ambition. But it's also another "Hey, what if we re-imagined this famous character by making him really sad and moody?!?" film.
Nearly a full house on a Friday at 3pm for this stunner. (And it looked fantastic.) Thanks for having me, @amcinematheque.bsky.social.
A special Q&A last night.
I'm very happy right now.
Many good arthouse films out there right now. But for the @latimes.com, I gave some love to one that's been a bit overlooked. Here's me praising Chie Hayakawa's RENOIR, a different look at dying and growing up.
The ONCE UPON A TIME IN HARLEM teaser trailer is out. I love this film, which I reviewed at Sundance: www.screendaily.com/reviews/once...
I love movies. I love movie theaters. But there is nothing quite like going to an art museum. I feel incredibly alive and emotional in those spaces. It's even better when you walk around with someone else and share the experience, talking back and forth about which works speak to you and move you.
For the @latimes.com, I reviewed the Cannes prizewinner THE LITTLE SISTER, a coming-out drama that's as much about learning to love yourself as it loving someone else.
The rollerskating sequence in HEAVEN’S GATE went just as crazy as I hoped it would on 35mm! Isabelle Huppert is also, unsurprisingly, the most chic woman in the world.

An offbeat 11-year-old Japanese girl pre-grieves her cancer-stricken father in filmmaker Chie Hayakawa's sensitive drama, refreshingly free of heaviness.

I hope this doesn't sound patronising but go and see art. The Hockney talk has reminded me again that seeing art in the flesh is a very different experience to seeing it on a screen. You understand why people cry in art galleries. It's not just the gift shop prices.
