We’ve seen what happens when we hold derelict residential property owners accountable. Between 2023-25, Edmonton’s problem property initiative influenced 400+ demolitions, with 75% of sites now being redeveloped. Over 300 properties were charged higher tax rates.
That is the kind of work that helps revitalize communities. It’s time to do the same on the commercial side. Property ownership comes with responsibility. The public shouldn’t bear the cost of neglect.
This week, Council has an opportunity to take a stronger approach to derelict commercial sites. These buildings increase fire risk, create safety hazards, consume a higher amounts of city resources, and hurt local businesses and residents. Options will be discussed this Thursday.
I will have more to say soon, but for now: Thank you for getting out to vote, and making your voice heard. I am so grateful to continue to serve as your councillor for the next four years, and can’t wait to continue building a stronger Edmonton together.
