9 June, 1905: Einstein's seminal article on the photoelectric effect, received by "Annalen der Physik" March 18, was published.
The article proposed the idea of light quanta, extending Planck's quanta to light itself.⚛️🔭🧪

We're celebrating two birthdays with this image:
➡️ The ongoing birth of new stars within the nebulae featured here.
➡️ The birthday of the telescope that took this image: the VST, which had its first light 15 years ago today 🎂

What is this? An extraordinary abstract painting?
Nope!
This is an enhanced-color image of Mars taken by NASA’s Psyche spacecraft during its gravity-assist flyby last May 15.🔭🧪⚛️

...generated as complete units.”
So a 26-year-old Albert Einstein explained that light consists of packets with fixed energies corresponding to certain frequencies.
One such light quantum, a photon for history, must have a certain minimum frequency before it can liberate an electron.

Einstein states:
“The energy of a light ray spreading out from a point source is not continuously distributed over an increasing space, but consists of a finite number of energy quanta which are localized at points in space, which move without dividing, and which can only be absorbed or...⤵️

In 2D, gravity doesn’t make black holes — it makes "cones"!
And everything turns into convex #polyhedra.
#Geometry + General Relativity explained in the most elegant way.
One of the best #science threads in a long time.
Definitely read it! ⤵️

For this work, Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics 1921 (received in 1922)
"...for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect".

I did miss it, but glad to catch up with this ... radical ... "helioengineering" proposal to protect Earth from extreme solar storms.
