This study helps validate mindfulness to meaning theory, establishes a dose response boundary on when decentering leads to new meanings (might take closer to a month than a week), and shows positive engagement with chatbots designed to coach participants on mindfulness and value reflection.
The mindfulness-to-meaning theory suggests that decentering leads to new meanings, a process known as 'reappraisal', but growth in reappraisal was only evident after the 4 week (but not 1 week) intervention.
We found that compared to a 'check-in only' control condition, both mindfulness exercises and more western-style reflection on core values reduced sstress over time. This effect was primarily driven by improved decentering, the ability to become aware and reflect on thoughts and feelings.
