I live in a very rural, very red part of Arizona. Most houses here, including mine, have heat pumps because they are cheaper to run, period. Helps that gas is not at all common here - if you get it, it’s through a tank in your yard and you have to really want it.
Shifting how we power vehicles away from gasoline & diesel fuel & instead powering more of our vehicles by electricity, makes the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, or other oil supply shocks, much less powerful as an economic weapon. Decarbonization is a national security strategy, & it’s a big one.

We don’t use oil to make electricity in the continental U.S. When we shift powering our cars with oil to electricity, we stop using oil for transportation. Since we can make electricity from lots of clean sources, we increase security.
