Markwayne Mullin having equity in gas station potpourri elixirs might be what finally breaks my brain. The guy isn't fit to operate a pump at one of the gas stations where he's trying to push this snake oil, let alone oversee the most well-funded version of DHS in its (admittedly short) history.
For our new 2nd entry to the list, from Texas: In Decatur, a small town just outside the Dallas-Ft. Worth metro area, a proposal for the local PD to join the program met opposition from community members and concerned city council members. bsky.app/profile/titu...

Oh, and because we're both cited in the same NYT article, I'd like to use my 15 seconds to say Markwayne Mullin is a white supremacist.
SCOOP from @by-cjewett.bsky.social & me: Markwayne Mullin urged the Department of Health and Human Service to remove warnings from the FDA website about the health risks of the gas station drug kratom. Mullin owns equity in a leading kratom company called Botanic Tonics that could have benefited.
From Decatur, Texas last week: "In the Tuesday morning email, the police chief said he decided to pull the proposal after it became obvious that the issue had become a source of division among council members and within the community." www.wcmessenger.com/articles/dep...

I think it's important for people to read the kind of comments a judge has to make to extremely vulnerable people in order to get sanctioned.

I won't lie, it's very cool to see my work cited in the New York Times this morning. "Researchers estimate that the share of people detained through any type of 287(g) program rose to about 10 percent in January, up from about 3 percent a year before." www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

I’m not sure people realize how huge this problem is. During Trump 1.0, ~5,000 kids were separated from parents at the border. During Trump 2.0, the Brookings Institution estimates *145,000* US citizen kids have been separated, mostly in the country's interior www.brookings.edu/articles/how... 5/x
I just feel like every person in this country needs to know DHS is now explicitly paying bounties to local cops and sheriffs for each child + teenager they track down on behalf of ICE. While I'm not an attorney, I don't use that language lightly.
More from that contract: "If the service provider has indicated they will participate in locating UACs within their jurisdiction, all work performed must be in accordance with the UAC Statement of Objectives and Performance Metrics, Responsibilities, and Incentives Overview."
Just to re-emphasize, federal agents showed up at the DC offices of at least 3 nonprofit legal service providers late last week. Amica, Ayuda, and KIND are all subcontractors under a federal program specifically intended to serve unaccompanied children.
