The first of today’s #ChurchyardFlowers at Christchurch in Bradford-on-Avon; Rough Hawkbit mostly, but quite a few carefully marked and protected Pyramidal Orchids #WildflowerHour

#30DaysWild 14 'They seek him here, they seek him there...' but I found the Scarlet Pimpernel growing by a local lane. 🙂 Also bright yellow, five-petalled Creeping Cinquefoil and pink-and-white Field Bindweed. Further on in a shady area was Comfrey, & Charlock with its yellow cabbage flowers.

These are all growing in a single meadow, containing hundreds of Common Spotted, Heath Spotted and Chalk (possibly Marsh) Fragrant orchids. I struggle with dacts, but I'm sure some could be hybrids. #WildflowerHour #OrchidChallenge @bsbibotany.bsky.social @ukorchids.bsky.social

#30DaysWild 15 Usual distance for a local walk, but a different direction and this track climbs about 30m. Just enough to get above the clay and add some limestone to the soil. Instant result: Kidney Vetch and Tufted Vetch among the Ox-eye Daisies along the edge of the lane. @bsbibotany.bsky.social
A peal of church bellflowers: Clustered Bellflower is a highlight growing among Lady's Bedstraw, Bird's-foot Trefoil and Ox-eye Daisies in limestone soil by a village church. #ChurchyardFlowers #wildflowerhour @wildflowerhour.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social

A Victorian church in Herefordshire gives sanctuary to a pre-existing population of Autumn Lady's-Tresses, the last orchids of summer, now lost from the surrounding farmland. (August image.) #ChurchyardFlowers #wildflowerhour @wildflowerhour.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social
#30DaysWild 12 A length of laneside bank held a display of starry yellow Perforate St. John's-wort and the pink-purple spires of Hedge Woundwort, the yellow pea-like flowers of Meadow Vetchling scrambling among them. They grow in our wildlife garden too, but this chance combination looks better!

#30DaysWild 13 Spotted a clump of beautiful Flowering Rush along the Worcestershire Avon. Not common locally, a special find with three more flowering stems on the way. (I only had the phone camera and couldn't get closer, for obvious reasons! 😃) @bsbibotany.bsky.social

Kitchen window wildlife viewing on a wet morning for #30DaysWild 11. Jackdaw from a nearby nest in a house chimneypot. Traditionally Jackdaws are said to nest in chimneys and our local birds certainly keep up that tradition, a good population.
