I don't know how it's possible to interact with a child in any extended way and not appreciate the fullness of their humanity and personhood. And I would have said the exact same before the wee beastie, as an educator and auntie.
Children are small, inexperienced, and still-learning humans but they are fully human, here with all the rest of us, HUMAN, and you really cannot hate an entire category of humans without that doing something bad to your heart and mind.
