This week, Iβm posting about Plantago. I usually see it as a weed, tenaciously hanging on in compacted soil. As always, thereβs much more to the genus than that. π·: P. lanceolata, a weed with an almost worldwide distribution, is 1 of nearly 250 species in the genus. #Plantaginaceae #Botany πΎπ§ͺπ±

Bulbs are condensed stems whose leaves store food & water. The bud scales of Lilium bulbs are fleshy leaves modified for storage. I dug this Lilium lancifolium from my garden. It's interesting to see that it has roots both below & above the bulb. #Lilium #bulb #Liliaceae #Botany πΎπ§ͺπ±

What is going on with these lily stems (a cultivated hybrid, L. βBaferrariβ)? The fluorescent areas are part of the stem; they donβt wash or scrape off. I havenβt seen this kind of fluorescence on any of the other lilies in my garden. #Lilium #Fluorescence #Liliaceae #Botany πΎπ§ͺπ±
