The entire purpose of literacy in secondary education (6-12) is to teach these skills. Primary education is learning to read, secondary is reading to learn. There has been a targeted push to limit how students can acquire these skills: we’re asked to teach them in isolation and quickly. +
Black mamas and educators, especially in Texas and across the south, are walking around with heavy hearts, trying to keep whole worlds together. Say a prayer for one or all of us if you can.
Even though making connections (to the self, to other texts, to lived experiences) is a standard across the country, because it’s not easily tested, it’s not taught. So, in theory, the TEKs (TX standards) are thoughtfully constructed and promote critical thinking! But the truth is very different.

In addition to the challenges we face with k-12, we have a whole adult population that is communicating by text but actually doesn’t understand text and don’t know that they don’t know
