The entire purpose of literacy in secondary education (6-12) is to teach these skills. Primary education is learning to read, secondary is reading to learn.

Even though making connections (to the self, to other texts, to lived experiences) is a standard across the country, because it’s not easily tested, it’s not taught.
So, in theory, the TEKs (TX standards) are thoughtfully constructed and promote critical thinking! But the truth is very different.
