This is a 1661 letter from John Evelyn to King Charles II complaining about burning coal: "Whilst they are belching it forth their sooty jaws, the City of London resembles the face rather of Mount Etna, the Court of Vulcan, Stromboli or the Suburbs of Hell than an assembly of rational creatures..."
It's a great day for renewables on the UK electricity grid: 81.8% renewables, only 7.9% fossil fuels & a negative spot price. I'm not sure why there are still fossil fuels in the mix when the spot price is negative, but I guess it's because of distribution across the country. Anyone know for sure?

American federally-funded science, one of the most ambitious and effective mechanisms for advancing and sharing knowledge that the world has ever known, is about to undergo a real and grim metamorphosis. Read+share this, and if you're American (I assume the rest of us don't count), object.
It's definitely a day when a bit of joy might help so HOORAY for the new "cycle street" in Cambridge. I used to cycle down here nearly every day, and it makes perfect sense to give bikes priority over cars. I'm excited to see how it works in practice. 🚴‍♂️🚴‍♀️ www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

People have been complaining about fossil fuel pollution for a LONG time (see the very cross pamphlet from 1661 below), but is the end finally in sight? On this week's Rare Earth we ask: are we finally leaving fossil fuels behind? On air at 12 , online afterwards. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...

How lovely to spend an day doing proper "old school" classical physics demos. Fancy digital animations are never going to provide that beautiful moment when sand suddenly dances across a metal plate to reveal an unexpected natural symmetry/pattern, and the invisible becomes visible.

Thanks so much to @cerysmatthews.bsky.social for highlighting World Ocean Day (which is tomorrow) on her Radio 6 Music show this morning! It was great to share the ocean love and also to geek out about the astonishing Arctic explorer and humanitarian Fridtjof Nansen. 🌊🌊 www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...
