thanks @normornstein.bsky.social -- and he confirmed it all with his vile display this morning and then some
Pete Hegseth's bloodlust and sadism are rooted in his far-right theology: Christian Reconstructionism. On the pod, @sarahposner.bsky.social explains all this so well, tying it to Trump's latest threats of war crimes and the Pope's rebuke of Hegseth, all in one chat:

"When Hegseth tries to don the armor of a warrior priest, the result is a rancid mess that should offend believers and nonbelievers alike."
Read @radiofreetom.bsky.social on Hegseth's ugly combo of fake piety and "adolescent, gung-ho excitement about war":

This is a great (and very important) contrast. The Catholic church has been the singlemost important proponent of Just War theory over the centuries, which is why Pope Leo goes around muttering about leaders with blood on their hands.
I haven't looked into it, but my guess is that Hegseth is also a fan of Mars Hill-style "manly Christianity" as well, with all its severe distortions and misunderstandings of gender roles.
In today's Pentagon briefing, Hegseth issued a Crusader-inspired "Christian" blessing, after promising to drop more and "bigger" bombs on Iran. This ersatz preacher is a performative sadist.
What parallel universe is Pete broadcasting from? He appears totally unhinged and untethered from reality. They have guided us directly into a strategic catastrophe and here we sit watching toddlers play games in the war room😞
Good if distressing read. Great to see @julieingersoll.bsky.social get some attention for her relevant work! #ChristianNationalism #Reconstructionism #JustWar

As Pope Leo criticizes Pete Hegseth’s war prayer and Trump’s threats toward Iran go haywire, a scholar-of-religion explains how Hegseth-Trump war crimes are rooted in extreme right-wing theology.

Hegseth imagines himself defending "Western civilization." But the West has also made important contributions to the idea that there are moral limits on what we can do in war, from Cicero through Augustine, Grotius, Kant and more. He discards this inheritance. 6/

Pete Hegseth just held a prayer service in which he appealed for God's help in killing our "enemies" with maximal violence and brutality. Hegseth's bloodlust and sadism are drawing sustenance from his particular brand of far-right Christianity. 1/

Does God want America to kill as many of our enemies as we can—in as violent a fashion as possible? We have a defense secretary who apparently thinks so.
Hegseth appears to be a devotee of Christian Reconstructionism. As one religious scholar notes, this posits that "all authority belongs to God," which renders the state’s authority wholly subordinate to a "higher category of Biblical law."
This explains a lot. 3/
