as a person who's been through similar, what happens is you're SO RELIEVED that that "sweet warm person" you swear you know, is finally back. you're on edge all the time without even realizing it, especially if you think they're just misunderstanding you. you think ok good now they finally see that
i wasn't doing them wrong. and you feel a sense of ease like things are finally back to normal, like when you first fell in love. it was just "ups and downs." especially when you're completely unfamiliar with that type of abuse. which i was! i didn't know i experienced it until long after we split!!
