Shearwaters make efficient navigational decisions, even at very fine scales
Following this finding, we discuss the learning mechanisms that may underpin this navigational efficiency - including how birds might distinguish between routes where the absolute difference in payoff is minimal, but the relative payoff is large. Give it a read! doi.org/10.1242/jeb....
In this study, we displaced Manx shearwaters, a wide-ranging seabird, to proximal sites around their home colony. We found that, despite very slight differences in route payoffs in comparison to their free-ranging movements, shearwaters adopt the most efficient routes when returning home.
Thank you to my co-authors, Sarah, Joe M, Trina, Joe W, Paddy, Alana, Emma, Barbara, and Max. And of course, my supervisors, Tim Guilford and Oliver Padget. @morfjoe.bsky.social @katrina-siddiqi.bsky.social @joewynnbirds.bsky.social @plewin.bsky.social @olliepadget.bsky.social
Alongside my paper, I was asked a few questions by the JEB about my research journey and life! Have a read here: doi.org/10.1242/jeb.... šŸ¦šŸ§—šŸ¼ā€ā™‚ļøšŸŒŠšŸ”ļø
