Memphis: TONIGHT.
1d
Memphis, don't miss this one: 1 screening only, 7 p.m. 6/10, Studio on the Square: @indiememphis presents THE PYTHON HUNT, a look at the Florida Everglades' real-life 10-day Python Challenge -"The Burning Man of snake hunting," with a political edge (kill the "invasive species").
I really liked BACKROOMS. A sinister affirmation of a modern apprehension of the uncanny, beyond anxiety, infecting even the most mundane spaces. Great design (Showroom Gothic), and Parsons knows where to place and when to move his camera. Not needed: Sequels, to ‘explain,’ and dilute the impact.
Someone should ask him to name his current favorite Knick. I’m sure the answer would be the same as when he was asked his favorite Bible verse. “To me that’s very personal. I don’t want to get into specifics.”
interesting title
Nice to see the M-town get its due right off the bat in Questlove’s new EARTH, WIND & FIRE documentary. (Not that the portrait of the city is flattering, beyond music…)
New movies in Memphis, 6/12: Spielberg's DISCLOSURE DAY; THE FURIOUS (Hong Kong action, being compared to 'The Raid'); STOP! THAT! TRAIN! (disaster-movie spoof starring drag queens); JINSEI (anime); MAIN VAAPAS AAUNGA (from India).

Accompanied by @aceatkins.bsky.social, I returned to the place I drove to almost every day from 1981 until 2019: the old Commercial Appeal building (5 stories, for close to 1500 employees!), now slated for demolition, possibly as early as this weekend. bit.ly/4aoPD2I

Explaining why a society ruled by women is superior to its pre-nuclear war predecessor in Gene Roddenberry’s PLANET EARTH (1974).
