I'm obsessed with this 18th Century signature. Look at it. Ridiculous. (I'm still not 100% sure, but I think it says Sam Wilding)

An honest to goodness Hey Nonny Nonny in a 1680s King's Bench case. Lovely stuff [TNA KB 33/5/5]

A would-be curate with no cure: John Hammond Fisk, a clergyman staying at the Lamb Inn, Wallingford, 1851. (I know this is standard language but I still think it's charming, and slightly sad!)

Wills can be so juicy. Elisha & Ann Gadd baptised 6 children from 1803-14 but his Will of 1816 reveals that they were unmarried. His property went to Ann PAIN, who ‘has for many years last past lived and resided with me as my wife and in every respect conducted herself as a true and faithful wife.’

Today I finished the audiobook version of A Short History of the World According to Sheep by @sallycoulthard.bsky.social It’s a wonderful social and family history resource, jam-packed with insights about British society (with plenty of global contrast and comparison) over thousands of years.

Fascinating world of ancient #glass: A magnificent #Roman striped mosaic bowl, made of preformed rods and canes fused on or in mold. Timeless beauty! Dating late 1st BC–early 1st AD, found in Cuora, Cavarzere, Italy 📷 Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Adria
I thoroughly enjoyed hearing @janetfew.bsky.social talk about her straw plaiting ancestors in Aston Clinton and the Kimbles. Many of my ancestors were also plaiters and lacemakers in those villages and the surrounding area.

Today’s Law and Order walking tour in the City of London (via @thelondonarchives.bsky.social) ran the gamut from Roman public executions to Tudor show trials, C18th gaol-breakers to ingenious police call posts, and pickpockets to the Kray Twins. Thanks to @whoamiftr.bsky.social for organising!
