I can buy a battery for ~$3,000 to offset monthly costs of $60. Not even counting install, taxes, etc. I'm not breaking even for about four years. I'm betting there will be a cheaper alternative in that time frame which is why I'm holding out.

This is more a problem with your system not being equipped properly than it is solar not being worth it.
You don't have batteries, or if you do you don't have nearly enough for your needs. THAT is your issue. You're buying power at it's most expensive while selling it back when it's cheapest.
