Most issues are like this for most people! Unless they are directly involved in a big and basic way, it's all symbolic/identity politics based on very limited information. Even things they care a lot about and are affected directly by, e.g. economic conditions, are mediated by partisanship.

It took me a long time to really internalize this fact, but the truth is that almost no one, across the entire spectrum of US politics, really cares about climate change as such. Almost everyone, on every side, from every angle, is using it as a canvas upon which to project their priors.
