Banning kids from YouTube would be such a mistake. I learned many of my skills from that place before I got to uni. It probably helped me get to uni tbh.
If the tech guys didn’t have the arts to act as bait, they’d have nothing you love, nothing to draw you in. It’s just a pipe otherwise. Spotify and YouTube don’t make anything except money.
You want your kids to work in the arts? Start with lobbying to police this now 25 year crazy experiment in what happens if we just Wild West this shit, and artists can no longer profit from their work, and broadcasters can no longer compete fairly for income.
The money is being made, removed from the broadcasting industry, and being extracted, taken out of the arts and into tech, where it is hoarded by billionaires. It is an act of piracy, looting, sabotage. Fucking hate it.
Whenever I see something I’ve written on YouTube, ripped with the BBC branding logo on it, and just left there, with adverts either end for huge multinational brands, I think of how hard it is for me to scrape a living now, and I want to fucking scream.
Don’t ban kids using YouTube. Make YouTube behave like a broadcaster. Pay creators. Reinvest in the creative industries. Pay fair tax back into creators’ economies. Follow guidelines on fair usage and copyright. Play fair. It’s bigger than TV now. Make it behave like TV.
