A quick story about how Brooke is an amazing teacher. In 2017, I reported my first piece for OTM about a Wild West theme park in Sweden that became a Syrian refugee camp. I got great tape and had worked through most of the ideas / story beats. But the first draft was long and constipated. 1/4
Brooke told me to cut it half, but I was too inexperienced to edit my own writing. A few days before it was scheduled to air, it was still a mess. She called me into her office and said “I’m going to lunch. When I get back, this needs to be done…” 2/4
As of this month, I've officially been at @onthemedia.bsky.social for 10 years! I started at the show as a temporary assistant producer just after finishing an internship with Radiolab. I was incredibly nervous because all the producers were so smart and I knew nothing about how to cover the media..
