“I was just listening to those expressing legitimate concerns about the pace of cultural change and the pressures on local services. I never wanted people being burned out of their houses in pogroms by masked men encouraged by the world’s richest man…” etc.
Perhaps we shouldn’t have handed over almost all power in the world to people who see the destruction of a large part of that world and its population as just a potential future negative externality that can be hedged against.

Just spitballin’ here, but the financial and economic systems of the world are not fixed and unavoidable results of nature. They are not unbreakable laws of the universe or unalterable constants.
They’re just made up by humans. If they don’t serve humans, humans can just make up other ones.
Reminded me that long ago and while quite drunk I summarised The Blue Planet, the landmark series on the natural history of the oceans, as: “It’s just funny fishes”.
In a sane world FIFA would threaten to withdraw games from the US.
Even in this world CAF, UEFA etc should act, and national FAs should threaten to withdraw their teams in solidarity.
Turns out that individuals’ self-interested decisions do not aggregate to meeting collective or societal interests after all.
