#OnThisDay 2005 The Magic Numbers by The Magic Numbers released Their debut album was a UK Top10 and was nominated for a Mercury Music Award In the UK the album spawned 3 Top20 singles and 1 at No25 They also toured as the backing band for Salford singer Ren Harvieu
#OnThisDay 1981 Pretty in Pink by The Psychedelic Furs released The single was taken from their 2nd album Talk Talk Talk The original only made it to No43 on the UK charts but in 1986 it was used in the John Hughes “Brat Pack” movie that used its song title (and the re-release went to No18)
#OnThisDay 1972 Zing went the strings of my Heart by The Trammps released The Philadelphia soul band’s debut single was a cover of the 1935 original by James F. Hanley The guitarist Dennis Harris played on lots of Philly records and was also a member of Mfsb and the Salsoul Orchestra

#OnThisDay 1994 Numb by Portishead released The lead single off their debut album Dummy The single failed to chart in most countries (the highest it got was 213 in Australia) The album did a lot better and was No2 in the UK (and made the top 20 in many European countries)
#OnThisDay 1982 Rock The Casbah by The Clash released It was the 2nd single off Combat Rock (their 5th album) It was their only Top Ten in the USA (No8) but it only reached No30 in the UK (but a re-release in 1991 went to No15) The lyrics are in English,Arabic,Hebrew,Turkish and Sanskrit
#OnThisDay 1981 Ghost Town by The Specials released The song about urban decay and inner city violence came out just as riots were taking place across Britain It was the final single with all 7 original members on it and it went to No1 in the UK and stayed there for 3 weeks

#OnThisDay 1999 Race for the Prize by The Flaming Lips released It was a release off the Soft Bulletin album and the single sneaked into the UK Top40 at No39 The lyrics tell the story of 2 competing scientists racing for the cure of all mankind (Wayne Coyne wrote it after his dad died of cancer)
