Giulio Cabianca died #OnThisDay 65 years ago, testing at Modena a Cooper-Ferrari, which suffered a stuck throttle, flew out of the circuit into a street, & hit a van, a motorcycle & a bicycle. The van driver, the motorcyclist, the cyclist & Cabianca all died. Pic: privateer Maserati.
James Hunt died in his bed, aged just 45, #OnThisDay in ’93. Here he is at Monaco in ’76, his #F1 world championship year, in the beautiful McLaren M23 that he raced to 6 F1 GP victories that amazing season.
Congratulations Nyck de Vries, a great guy & a fine driver with whom I worked closely when he was a McLaren Young Driver Development Programme member & I was the team’s #F1 comms chief, now victorious for Toyota in this weekend’s #LeMans24Hours. Well deserved & wonderful to see! 👏
Remembering John Miles, born #OnThisDay in ’43. Miles died in 2018, following a stroke, but he’d briefly driven in #F1 for Lotus (’69-70) before becoming a successful road-car engineer (again for Lotus) then a fine technical road-test journalist for #Autocar.

#OnThisDay 40 years ago Nigel Mansell (Williams; pic) won the #CanadianGP, which has been run on 15 June 4 times. “I loved the titanium skid plates, & the sparks they caused,” he once said. “It was such a distraction to anyone following you.” They were the best #F1 fireworks for spectators, too.
