The amazing lower Church of St. Francis in Assisi, including a frescoed Maesta by Cimabue at the right. Today is his day.
Today's artist without a known birthday: Cimabue. Maestà di Santa Trinità, c. 1280, to bring some gold into your life.
King Charles IV of Spain & family, painted in 1800 by Francisco Goya. Always wonder what they thought of it, or indeed what he thought of them. Today is Goya's day.
Francisco de Goya: Self-portrait being treated by Dr. Arrieto, 1820. Just in case he didn’t survive (but he did!). Today has been his day.
2/2 Really -- did the Spanish royals like this portrait? I would never have shown even most hideous royals like this! Goya, what were you thinking?
3/3 From which we also learn that Saint Francis had sticky-outy ears. Yay Francis!

2/2 A pair of prophets just hanging out at the bottom of Cimabue's golden Maesta.
2/2 Cimabue's Madonna with angels and, lurking at the right, a super-early portrait of Saint Francis himself, only 50 years after his death! From the lower basilica at Assisi, 1279, on CImabue's day.
Truth rescued by time, as witnessed by history. We can still hope. Painted 1814 by Francisco Goya, whose birthday was today.
