Like you can read "none of these people actually believed in the bigoted things they said and did, they just thought everyone else believed them" exculpatorily, but "there are people who uphold regressive behaviors and attitudes just because they think they're supposed to" is a way darker framing
It's really interesting to me bc as presented I think it's really easy to read as kind of naïve, like I think you can read it as trying to minimize the extent to which people do sincerely hold harmful and bigoted ideas
