It's just amazing to me how much that old political order has totally collapsed in my lifetime. Hal was invited to Ronald Reagan's inaugural ball in 1980! He was not a casual Republican. But he loathed W, and the Second Iraq War shattered whatever was left of his attachment to that party.

Yeah, I know The Terror already exists, but “horror movie from the perspective of the colonized” is not a vein that you could tap out quickly.
All of my grandparents abandoned the Republican Party because of Bush II; my dad's dad was angry at him well before the Second Iraq War. They spent their last years voting Democrat after decades of being in the GOP. But if any of them could see this shit, I think they'd lose it.
