I'd add lockers to this as well. At least in Charlottesville, where garage parking downtown is stupidly cheap (i.e., $1/hr), a major perk of driving is having a place to put your stuff. I like biking downtown directly after work, but having my bag with me isn't ideal.
Each ICE operation generates roughly $196,000 in monthly losses for nearby businesses and communities. (That's 11x the government's administrative cost of a deportation.)
Why?
ICE activity decreases foot traffic in those public areas.
To be fair to @nathanalderman.com, this does seem to be a claim that CACVB (indirectly) makes, based on Virginia Tourism Corporation data.
It's just... wildly implausible, and suggests their survey-based calculations are wrong (and were never sanity checked).
I'm not shy about criticizing my employer—esp. its frequent gulf between aspirations and reality—but I remain grateful for the academic freedom that lets me pursue any research topic I choose, the excellent students who are a joy to teach, ample support resources, and my many amazing colleagues
