And I’m sure a LOT of people my age are having that conversation! The decision-making factors are stacking increasingly against us.
I used to be all in on public school but if I had kids today I don’t know if I would want them in public school! They’re being used as AI guinea pigs in far too many of them and the government is doing nothing to curb that. But I also can’t afford 20k a year on a good private school where I live.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with people choosing to have children regardless of these things, whether they have resources to help navigate them or not! But chiding an entire generation for not having children when we all can’t even get to the adult baseline of our parents, is cruel.
We can barely feed ourselves, we can’t get the jobs and homes we were told we could get. Our government is gutting public schools and undermining colleges. It doesn’t feel particularly accessible to raise children NOR does it feel like there is a particularly good adult future waiting for them!
Every single time falling birth rates come up there’s this undercurrent of “selfishness” behind it. Like no one is having children because we’re all too addicted to lattes and instagram. But what future are we supposed to be providing for children in this world right now?
