Now I am worried about the fact that I use dashes, colons and semi-colons all the time--and always have. After finally getting an essay I have been working on for YEARS into shape to submit it, now it may be rejected because of my punctuation habits. (Besides all other reasons it could be rejected).

We were a people who had no name. We cooked like Southerners, fried chicken, organ meats stewed with beans, yet we didn't tell stories. There were no stories, the past as closed as the dark shed in the backyard of the purple man, possibly dangerous but definitely off-limits.
