Dengue is rising. In Nepal, studying >500 #dengue patients, we found that waning immunity to Japanese encephalitis virus #JEV was associated with worsened dengue severity, which has implications for #vaccine campaign planning. Microglia protect the fetal brain from Zika virus, while primitive macrophages and monocytes drive infection and inflammation, highlighting diverse immune roles. Plus other great insights. Great work from @stjohnlab.bsky.social www.cell.com/cell/abstrac...

Excited to be at the #HCVFlavi2025 meeting in Singapore! Great mix of cutting edge #HCV and #Flavivirus research. Thanks to @stjohnlab.bsky.social Heidi Drummer and Rowena Bull labs for organizing!

Little break from talks to visit Knossos Palace… finally spending time with @zhijuanjexpmed.bsky.social not on zoom!
Save the date for #HCVFlavi2025, a joint Asia-Pacific meeting to be held October 13-16, 2025 in Singapore at Duke-NUS Medical School! More info to come!
A new analysis of a cohort in Nepal links the waning of vaccine immunity against Japanese encephalitis virus to elevated chymase levels and a higher risk of severe #dengue infection. Read more in #ScienceTranslationalMedicine: https://scim.ag/45ORL27
We wanted to put over a decade of advances on the immunology surrounding fetal Zika infection in context in our review "Immune mechanisms of congenital Zika syndrome" @sciimmunology.bsky.social. So happy to see it's #openaccess! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Excited to share our new #OpenAccess review: "Maternal IgE Influence on Fetal and Infant Health" led by Jozef. We discuss how maternal #IgE shapes fetal immunity and the shift to intrinsic early-life IgE production, with implications for #allergy onset. 👉 doi.org/10.1111/imr....
Did you know that the fetal immune system can protect from infection before birth? Check out our study identifying protective functions of #microglia, contrasting the harmful early influence of #monocytes and primitive macrophages to #zika virus infection. authors.elsevier.com/a/1k4rcL7PXq...

Fetal microglia are protective against Zika virus, but primitive macrophages and monocytes promote neuroinflammation and are disease promoting. Different fetal immune and neuronal cell types are targeted by different Zika lineages.
