On this day in 1899, Carrie Nation begins her career of extreme temperance work by destroying the stock of a saloon in Kiowa, Kansas.
She started with throwing rocks; the hatchet came later.
The French Magenta and the Solferino were the only two-decked broadside ironclads ever built, and the first to include an iron ram in their design. Commissioned in 1862-3, the Magenta caught fire in her galley and blew up in 1875; the Solferino was condemned in 1882.
