The Bangles made me open/receptive to the output of bands like L7, Bikini Kill, Luscious Jackson, Veruca Salt, The Breeders, and Savages.
When I started doing college radio, they opened me up to acts like The Go-Gos, The Runaways, The Supremes, and The Ronettes, who paved the way.
Went to my local cafe where they played “Eternal Flame” by The Bangles, and I expressed to them as well as having this moment in my memory, recollecting how The Bangles were the first band ever in my musical timeline. 🧵
All this to say that I’m really grateful for The Bangles being my introduction to bands in general.
If you take nothing else away from this thread, know that I walked into the cafe and as “Eternal Flame” was playing, I definitely did a whole lip sync song and dance to a verse and the hook.
Thanks to the advent of having MTV growing up, “In Your Room” was the introduction. It was groovy, peppy, and that hook lived in my head.
My parents took me to Target post-haste to acquire “Everything” and their previous album “A Different Light,” as my first tapes as a youth.

Every man I’ve known has their answers/allegiances ready when it comes to (insert legacy band here) but the answer 8-9 times out of 10 were mostly masc/male fronted bands that were their gateway into music.
Knowing it was four women who did that for me in the 80s is something I don’t take lightly.
YO! I didn’t expect this at all until @cheycab.bsky.social brought it to my attention this afternoon.
